How to Articulate Your Contributions as a Senior Leader

Visibility matters at every level, but the more senior you become, the more non-negotiable it becomes. You’re expected to justify your business impact and the larger salary that comes with your title. There are more eyes on you and greater scrutiny on everything you do. But as you rise, talking about your contributions gets trickier. You’re further away from day-to-day execution. You’re no longer building the financial model, debugging issues, or pulling data — your team is. So when someone asks what you’ve accomplished lately, you might wonder, “how do I articulate my value without taking credit for work others did?” Most leaders swing in one of two directions. Some deflect, saying things like, “My team did the heavy lifting,” or “Kudos to the people on the ground. I just got out of their way.” It sounds humble, but when you downplay your role, decision-makers start to wonder what you actually contributed. If your team did everything, what did they hire you for? Others overcorrect in the opposite direction and hog the spotlight. They say, “I turned the department around,” when what they really did was enable, unblock, or steer the team toward results. If your direct reports feel sidelined, trust erodes. There’s a middle ground to owning your wins without overshadowing others. Here’s how to talk about your senior-level impact in a truthful way that builds credibility and earns the recognition you deserve. Use “We-then-Me” Shout out specific people or teams, then follow up with your individual effort. This structure lets you celebrate others first while still making clear what you brought to the table. It also sounds more credible than leading with “I,” since most senior-level work happens through others . This can sound like: “We hit 104% of our target this quarter. Izzy and Manuel did an incredible job nurturing the pipeline. I restructured the territories to keep ownership clear.” “Legal and finance worked around the clock to get the deal done early. I interfaced with the executives to address their concerns and avoid a long negotiation.” Speak to Scale When you’re no longer doing hands-on work, success is measured by the size and complexity of what you run. Saying “I led the campaign” or “I manage operations” without context doesn’t convey much. A campaign could be a few-hundred-dollar test or a million-dollar rebrand. Operations could mean one warehouse or a global supply chain. Without details like budget, customer impact, or time horizon there’s no way to gauge the level you’re operating at. Quantifying scale makes your role clear without overexplaining. When you say, “I led a platform migration affecting 100,000 users,” no one assumes you wrote the code. But verbs still matter. “I launched a service to 2 million customers” implies you did it yourself, which is unlikely and can alienate others. “I directed the launch that reached 2 million customers” clarifies your role. Your competitive advantage is explaining why it happened, specifically the decisions you weighed, tradeoffs you made, and the things you said no to. Highlight your Stewardship At your level, you’re assessed on your ability to cultivate talent and advance the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Make this explicit with language like: “Since [value] is important to us, I put in place…” “I saw potential in [team member] and…” “I changed how we [work/communicate/operate] because…” “To bring [vision] to life, our team…” “To keep us on track toward [mission], we… Articulating your impact isn’t bragging or something to put off until you’re “less busy.” Your visibility affects everything from the budget and headcount you receive to the advancement opportunities you’re trusted with. A few small tweaks in how you talk about results can make your impact clear without sounding self-promotional.
